Quantitative Methods for Linguistic Research

Course time:
Tuesday/Friday 1:30-3:20 PM
Location:
JSB 108
Description:

This course is a statistics and experimental design course using examples from all areas of linguistics.  The focus is on the concepts behind various statistical analyses, including enough math to understand where the statistical results come from, and what type of analysis to use in order to answer which questions.  Topics include: hypothesis testing, power, effect size, one-factor designs, interaction, two-factor designs, understanding and interpreting a 3-way or higher level interaction, between-subjects vs. repeated measures factors, and random vs. fixed factors.  Each topic is addressed both from the perspective of ANOVA and from that of LME.  The course uses the R statistics language, but it is not a course in how to use R.  No previous statistics experience is necessary.

Before class begins: Please install R (and R Studio if you wish to use it) on your computer.  Both are free.  You can find R here: https://www.r-project.org/

and R studio (use the free version) here: https://www.rstudio.com/products/rstudio/

If you haven't used R before, you should also get some basic practice with using it in before starting the class.  There are many introductory R tutorials on the web.  I like this one by Bodo Winter:
